Enforcing Attribute Field Constraints

I have worked in non-spatial databases including Access and enforcing Attribute constraints e.g. length > 5 is fairly simple to do. Any user that attempts to enter a value less than 6 characters would immediately receive an error message.

I attempted this concept working with a personal Geodatabase by setting constraints on a spatial attribute field in a feature class in Access, however, when I attempted to digitize a feature associated with that feature class I immediately got an error in ArcMap stating that the digitize function failed due to the attribute constraint.

So, is there a workflow by which we can implement field attribute constraints at all in arcGIS whether it be a personal or a file GDB, at all ??
