Help newbie questions.....

About a million years ago, we had a EDN license and I wrote some code that used the SDE C API, and I haven't really looked at it since. Now I'm being forced to, since our client is having some issues that I need to get resolved. But it seems everything has changed from the last time that I looked at things, surprise, surprise. So what I need to do is to get an SDE database up and running, so that I can actually connect to it and try to get some data out of it. Of course, the machine that I used way back when I no longer have, so it is a brand new install. I have an EDN subscription. I downloaded and installed the ArcGIS Engine. I also installed a ArcSDE for Microsoft SQL Server 2008, which that is the database that I am using. Now I'm kind of at a loss as to what I need to do next. I need to get the license working for the software......way back when I seem to recall that on the EDN website there was a place to get a ecp license file emailed to me. All I seem to see there now is just some authorization codes. What exactly do I do with those codes? How do I get things licensed? Cant seem to find out any information about how to use those codes. Then my second question is how do I build an SDE database. Way back when I seem to remember that the database was created at installation time. It doesn't appear that this happens any longer. So how do I get the actually database created? And once I get these two pieces working, I saw the sde command line that allows me to take data from a shape file and load it into my sde database, so it that all still works then at that point I should be good to go. Just need you to point me in the right direction. Thanks.
